Within a Concord great room, a comfy retreat

Zippy hues help set off the cozy TV lounge in an oversized living space.

After moving from Cambridge to Concord, a professional couple had an unexpected issue with their new great room: It felt too large. Daunted by the scale, they used the Boston Design Center’s Designer on Call program and hired Barbara Elza Hirsch of Elza B. Design to furnish the space. Hirsch organized the room, which has a vaulted ceiling, into three distinct seating areas. While each one serves a specific function, the spunky color palette ties them together and reflects the wife’s Scandinavian heritage. This media lounge “is where they cozy up and relax on evenings and weekends,” Hirsch says.

2 The slim metal side table echoes the lines of the media center, holds a laptop or refreshments, and is easy to move.

4 The single seat cushion of the Bolton sofa from Robert Allen elongates the space. The branch pattern on the pillows adds interest without distracting. The blue velvet lumbar pillow matches a sofa across the room.

5 The munggur wood top on the side table with white lacquered surround introduces an organic element.

6 The Moroccan-style wool shag rug from Stark grounds the space. “The client loves the texture,” says Hirsch.

7 A mid-century-inspired Cavett bench from Crate & Barrel makes a perfect ottoman. “They wanted to both be able to put their feet up,” Hirsch says of the homeowners.
