The driver of a BMW that collided head-on with another vehicle on the Jamaicaway in Boston in 2014, killing two women inside, was sentenced to four years behind bars Thursday.
Jennifer Guzman, 28, was found guilty of two counts of motor vehicle homicide. The Suffolk County district attorney’s office said her blood alcohol level was about .20, more than twice the legal limit.
Prosecutors had sought a 10- to 12-year sentence. Guzman’s lawyer, Arthur Kelly, had requested a one-year sentence.
Prosecutors allege Guzman was speeding when her BMW crossed the double yellow line and struck a 2002 Toyota Camry traveling in the opposite direction.
Killed were Guzman’s friends: Everett resident Maria Y. Hernandez, 44, and Luz A. Puentes-Sheets, 34, who lived in Revere, authorities said. The driver and passenger of the other vehicle were seriously injured.
Before the crash, Guzman had visited a Boston nightclub, where she had several drinks, according to testimony at her trial.
Before Guzman was sentenced, an impact statement written by Puentes-Sheets’s 12-year-old daughter was read in court by the girl’s father.
“I will forever miss my mother,” she wrote. “I will miss spending Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, birthdays, and especially Mother’s Day.
“I will never get the chance to celebrate any of these holidays with my mother ever again. My mom would make every holiday so special . . . I only have the memories of what we shared.”
