Commuters who use the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s revamped Government Center Station can soon enjoy a cup of coffee and a doughnut while they wait for a Green or Blue Line train to arrive.
Officials from the transit agency announced Friday that a Dunkin’ Donuts will open sometime in the late summer or early fall inside the station on the Green Line level, near the westbound platform.
That’s not all. On the Blue Line, between the northbound and southbound platforms, a second vendor, Fresh Mart, will offer passengers beverages, candy, and snacks.
The rebuilt Government Center Station, located on the brick plaza outside City Hall, opened its doors to passengers last March, after being shuttered for two years.
The $113 million project, which features a gleaming glass house above ground, was finished on time and on budget.
The spaces where the Dunkin’ Donuts and variety store will be located were built into the new station as part of the renovations.
Officials picked the two vendors, who each signed a five-year lease to occupy those spaces, following an open and competitive bidding process. By adding vendors to the station who pay rent, the MBTA will maximize its non-fare revenue, officials said.
Before the old station shut down to make way for improvements, the monthly rent for a concession kiosk on the Blue Line level was $1,251.77. The new vendor will pay the transit agency $3,110 per month — more than double — for the first year, with rent increasing each year for the duration of the lease.
On the Green Line platform, where a Dunkin’ Donuts once stood in the middle of the station before renovations began, the rent was $5,021.65 per month. The new Dunkin’ Donuts will pay $9,365 per month for the first year, with rent increasing each subsequent year.
Both leases include options for five-year extensions, with rents increasing annually, MBTA officials said.
“The completely rebuilt station afforded us a great opportunity to boost our rent revenue at the newly renovated spaces,” said MBTA General Manager Brian Shortsleeve in a statement. “Every time we increase non-fare revenue, we ease the burden on our customers and taxpayers.”Steve Annear can be reached at email@example.com.
