East Brookfield animal shelter saves 17 cats from the path of Hurricane Dorian

An animal shelter in East Brookfield rescued 17 cats from the path of Hurricane Dorian Tuesday, officials said.

At least 5 dead in Bahamas from Dorian as evacuations begin in southeastern US

As Hurricane Dorian, now a Category 4 storm with devastating winds and high storm surges, crawled through the Bahamas, states across the Southeast US prepared for the worst.

Dorian weakens slightly as it continues to batter Bahamas, now a Category 4 storm

The National Hurricane Center said Dorian’s maximum sustained winds are 155 mph, which takes the extremely dangerous storm down one notch, from Category 5. The storm will move ‘‘dangerously close’’ to the Florida East Coast late Monday through Wednesday evening.

Dorian is now a Category 5 hurricane. With sustained winds at 185 miles per hour or stronger, it’s the second-strongest Atlantic storm since 1950. Dorian is expected to hammer parts of the Southeastern US later this week.

Cutting it close: Florida’s fate in Hurricane Dorian may be a matter of miles
